While attending the University of Guelph, Karen Sorensen spent summers working at Banff, a picturesque town of roughly 8,000 nestled in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains.
In a recent interview-format feature in the Regina Leader-Post, the U of G alumna said her love of Banff blossomed during a family vacation when she was 14. She declared then that she would one day live in the town.
Born and raised in Orangeville, Ont., just north of Guelph, Sorensen has served as Banff’s mayor since 2010. She spent 17 years working in the hotel industry in the town and another 13 years running her own hospitality training business.
Before becoming Banff mayor, she was a school trustee for two terms and a town councillor, also for two terms. She has served on a host of civic boards.
