Senator Wants To Talk Soil Health

Senator Rob Black cares about agricultural soils in Canada and wants Canadians to care more about them.

Black studied agricultural business at the Ontario Agricultural College at U of G and worked for agricultural organizations throughout his professional life.

Black was featured in a May 23 Western Producer story in which he advocated for a broader focus on the health of soil. He has been a senator since Feb. 2018 and is a member of the Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture and Forestry.

The committee recently heard from soil scientists and others about the subject of soil health in Canada. Black came away from the meeting believing it is time for a new Senate study on the subject.

Black spent 15 years with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and is past-president of the Canadian 4-H Council. He was raised on a mixed farm near Fergus, Ont. and continues to live in the area.
