Grad Rises to PR Heights at Sony Music Canada

Sure, University of Guelph-Humber grad Julia Pittman has landed her dream job as the manager of artist and media relations at Sony Music Canada. But she arrived there only after adding layer upon layer of work experience to her résumé, doing jobs that both paid the bills and gave her loads of people skills and public relations savvy.

Pittman spoke about her exceptional job and how she landed it in a recent feature in StyleDemocracy. She started out at Guelph-Humber with a photography focus, but switched to the public relations side, seeing it as offering better employment potential.

She got her foot in the door at Sony Music Canada through an internship, and when that gig was over she gained public relations experience in the fashion, travel and finance sectors.

With Sony, it’s her job to get the music company’s talent as much media coverage as possible. Of course, she spends a lot of time with musicians and music industry insiders, and a lot of time on the road with bands.

When she gets the opportunity to speak with students about PR prospects, she encourages them to see any number of fields as a way to learn the ropes. Work hard, gain experience and the opportunities will come, she says.
